What is Servio Deo?
The term Servio Deo translates to I serve God. Since 2012 7th-12th graders (and recent graduates) from Holy Family have traveled together to Bay St. Louis, MS to serve a community that still feels the effects of 2005 Hurricane Katrina. For a week, these students work at local homes on maintenance, clean up, or rebuilding projects; at food pantries, shelters, and daycares.
Our host location, St. Stanislaus, is located on the gulf, allowing students to enjoy the beach during free time before dinner. Each morning we start our day with Mass, and each evening we come together for a few hours to hear a professional speaker, to worship as led by Catholic musicians, and then participate in varying organized activities such as dance party, capture the flag, Adoration, and other special prayer opportunities.

What are the accommodations?
We stay in dorm-style housing at St. Stanislaus, an all boy boarding school on the Gulf. Each room houses 3 students and comes with its own full bathroom. The dorms are multiple stories, so we conveniently separate guys & gals, as well as LifeTeen & Jr Youth for the night time. We also have our very own “night ninja,” or some prefer “night time security” who checks in to make sure folks don’t leave their rooms or wander around campus.
Who can attend?
Students entering the 7th grade through this year’s graduating class can attend Servio Deo. Participants range from all sorts of involvement in LifeTeen & Jr Youth. For some, Servio Deo is the first experience one might have with LifeTeen/Jr Youth, for others, it is the highlight of their involvement in Servio Deo. In 2015, we actually had several students who graduated having attended every Servio Deo since its’ inception in 2012.
Additionally, we rely on parent and young adult (21+) chaperones to help lead our work groups and serve as examples throughout the week.
Finally, we’re led each year by a volunteer “work crew” of College aged students, often former Servio Deo participants, throughout the week. These volunteers help prepare in the weeks leading up to Servio Deo, and work tirelessly throughout the week to make sure everything runs smoothly for our chaperones and participants.
Wait, how much does this cost?
Preface: you can work off a lot of the cost by working our awesome fundraisers: for Jr Youth that includes Fall Trivia Night, Poinsettia Sale, and Spring Trivia Night. LifeTeen can reduce their cost by working October Pumpkin Sale, and Spring Pancake Breakfast & Mardi Gras.
Both Jr Youth and LifeTeen can sell $100 worth of stock certificates, donations which call for the participant to write a post card from Servio Deo, in order to lower their Servio Deo cost.
